Thousands to gather in search of soulmates

Nation’s largest match-making event for young professionals set for

Shanghai

ELAINE WU in Beijing

About 8,000 single men and women will gather in a Shanghai park next month

in the country’s largest match-making event.

Young professionals, from teachers to lawyers to engineers, will have five

hours to try to meet their soulmates through a dinner and games organised

by the China Association of Social Workers’ match-making service committee.

Committee director-general Wang Weiming said the aim of the event was to

give singles an opportunity to meet as many prospective dates as possible.

"The response so far has been very good because a large event such as this

makes it very convenient for white-collar people to meet," he said.

"Our plan is to hold this event once a year."

About 3,000 people have applied to join the event since the 15

participating match-making companies began selling tickets through singles

clubs and similar organisations two weeks ago. Some singles clubs from

Japan and Korea also plan to join the event.

Most applicants, about 65 per cent so far, are women. Mr Wang said the goal

was to bring the ratio of men to women ratio down to 4:6.

One reason more women were signing up was that they were eager to get

married after reaching a certain age, said Wang Xiaoying, manager of

Shanghai Yuan Yang Yuan Marriage Introduction Company.

Some of those who had called up for tickets were parents who wanted to go

to the event with their daughters to find a son-in-law, she said.

"Men are not in a rush. They think their careers are more important," Ms

Wang said. "If a guy is successful at age 30 or 40, he can still find a

woman in her 20s. But it’s more difficult for women to do the same."

Ms Wang said her company started catering to white-collar workers five

years ago because they usually had a busy work schedule and a small social

circle. Most of them were the only child in the family, which meant they

could not meet dates through their siblings’ friends or classmates.

The 100 yuan entry ticket includes a dinner and a booklet that contains a

short description of all the singles, including their education, jobs, age,

height and contact information, among other things.

Mr Wang said the booklet was the key to the event because singles could

contact somebody they were interested in later on.

There would be cupids working the floor to help with the match-making

process. If someone is too shy to approach a potential mate, they will be

able to ask the helper to deliver a message for them.

To join, applicants must be at least 20 years old but not more than 40 for

women and 45 for men. They must have a tertiary education and prove they

are not married.

The event will be held in Shanghai’s Zhongshan Park on October 22 from 4pm

to 9pm.

It is sponsored by the Xinmin Evening News.
