Ile St Marguerite (St Marguerite Island)
It only takes a 15-minute boat ride from Cannes to get there but it took The Man in the Iron Mask 11 years to leave this tiny, forested island. The mysterious individual was believed to be of noble blood, but his identity has never been proven. His cell can be visited in the Fort of St Marguerite, now renamed the Musée de la Mer (Museum of the Sea) . This museum also houses archaeological discoveries from shipwrecks off the coast of the island, including Roman and Saracen ceramics. There is a regular boat service from the mainland. Guided tours in English are available in summer.
Opening Times: The first boat to Ile St Marguerite departs Cannes at 0730. The last boat off the island leaves at 1900. The museum is open Tues-Sun 1030-1315 and 1415-1645 (Oct-Mar); Tues-Sun 1030-1315 and 1415-1745 (Apr-May); daily 1000-1745 (Jun-Sept).

Musée de la Castre (Castre Museum)
The Musee de la Castre, on the hilltop of Le Suquet, is housed in the former chateau of the monks of the Lérins Isles and the 12th-century chapel of St Anne. Nineteenth-century paintings by local artists depict images of Cannes under rosy skies with palm trees, fishing boats and ladies in voluminous skirts. There is also a fascinating collection of 200 musical instruments, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern antiquities and an ethnology display. Guided tours in English are available on request.
Opening Times: Tues-Sun 1000-1300 and 1400-1700 (Oct-Mar); Tues-Sun 1000-1300 and 1400-1800 (Apr-Jun and Sep); daily 1000-1900 (Jul-Aug).

The Painted Walls of Cannes
Since 2002 the Municipality of Cannes has been commissioning artists to paint vast, film-related pictures on the side of local buildings. Today there are 14 paintings scattered around the city, which celebrate Cannes’ legendary connection with the glamorous world of cinema. Cannes Tourist Office can provide you with a map detailing their locations. A walk around these great pictures is an afternoon of free, easy-going entertainment.
Ile St Honorat (St Honorat Island)
Cistercian monks are the only inhabitants of the smaller, southern St Honorat Island. Monks have inhabited the island more or less continuously since AD410 and, at the height of their powers, owned Cannes, Mougins and Vallauris. Medieval vestiges remain in the stark church, which is open to the public, and in the ruins of the 11th-century monastery on the sea's edge. The monks divide their time between prayer and producing red and white wines, honey, lavender oil and Lérina
Opening Times: The first boat to Ile St Honorat departs Cannes at 0800 (Fri) or 0900 (Sat-Thurs). The last boat off the island leaves at 1700 (winter) or 1800 (summer).

The Villas of Cannes
Nineteenth-century Cannes can still be seen in its grand villas, built to reflect the wealth and social standing of their owners and inspired by anything from medieval castles to Roman villas. Lord Brougham's Italianate Villa Eléonore Louise (one of the first great villas in Cannes) was built between 1835 and 1839. Also known as the Quartier des Anglais, this is the oldest residential area in Cannes and perfect for a stroll. Another famous landmark is the beautiful Villa Fiésole (known today as the Villa Domergue), so named as it was designed in the style of Fiesole, near Florence by Jean-Gabriel Domergue. The villas are not open to the public, but Villa Domergue may be visited by appointment.

City One Day Tour: selecting following attractions:
Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes)
More fortress than palace, this mighty landmark with its crenellated facade and slit windows looms above Avignon. The immense square in front is the impressive setting for the Avignon Festival. Built for Popes who decamped from Rome to Avignon during a 14th-century dispute, it actually combines two structures - the austere 'Old Palace' (1334-42) and the extravagantly Gothic 'New Palace' (1342-52). The interior is a maze of rooms, mostly empty but rich with Italian frescoes. The highlights are the Pope's Bedchamber, its walls awhirl with frescoes of birds and grapevines, and the Grand Tinel, where the pope's banquets were held with the pope sitting on a raised platform.

Pont St Bénezet (St Bénezet Bridge)
'Sur le pont d'Avignon on y danse, on y danse ...' - the melody of the 19th-century song still draws visitors to the famed bridge that is formally known as the Pont St Bénezet, after the shepherd whose heavenly vision and determination led to the bridge being built. Spanning the two channels of the River Rhône and the island in between ( Ile de la Barthelasse ), the bridge was built between 1177 and January 1185. Originally made of wood, it had to be continuously rebuilt, as it was the only crossing, providing a link between the Mediterranean and Lyon, an important trade hub in the Middle Ages. The river finally won the day, washing away the bridge in the mid 1600s. Today, only four of its original 22 arches and the tiny Chapelle St Nicholas remain. This delicate Romanesque chapel, dedicated to St Nicholas, patron saint of barge men, should not be missed. A small museum, situated beneath the ticket office, contains images of the bridge in former centuries.

Le Musée Angladon
Set inside the 18th-century Hôtel de Massilian, a very grand and pleasing former private mansion in the heart of historic Avignon, this museum is home to a remarkable collection of 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century art. The artworks and the mansion were both donated to the town by local artists Jean et Paulette Angladon-Dubrujeaud, who inherited them from successful Parisian couturier and art collector Jacques Doucet. Attractively displayed in bright, spacious rooms, the works include masterpieces by Degas, Daumier, Sisley, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso and Modigliani. On the first floor, the rooms of the house are immaculately furnished and decorated in period style.

Housed in a splendid 18th-century mansion, with fine, spacious, well-organised galleries, it displays a very varied collection of paintings, sculptures and other artworks from the 15th to the 20th century, ranging from fine arts to decorative crafts such as tapestry, jewellery and porcelain, as well as ethnic art, and examples of work by some of the best known modern painters (among them Corot, Manet, Sisley and Modigliani) to pieces by less well-known local artists. There’s a remarkable archaeology collection too, and frequent interesting special exhibitions.

Rocher des Doms
Ramps from the Palais des Papes lead up past the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms to the Rocher des Doms, the site of Avignon's earliest settlement. The rocky area was landscaped into a pleasant plateau with an artificial rock garden in the 18th century. Nineteenth-century additions include a lake and the statues of prominent Provençal figures, such as writer Félix Gras and artists Paul Saïn and Paul Vaysan. Terraces were laid out in the 20th century, offering sweeping views of the River Rhône, Pont St Bénézet, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and the Alpilles. Villeneuve-lès-Avignon
City buses link Avignon’s Old Town with its suburban 'ville neuve' (new town) across the Rhône. Originally Villeneuve allowed the King of France to keep an eye on the popes on the far side of the river. Soon popes and cardinals themselves could not resist its charms, and built their own luxurious Villeneuve residences. Together with neighbouring Les Angles, it still has impressive views of the Papal city. Philippe le Bel Tower was the other end of Pont St Bénézet. The key attraction is the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction. Founded by Pope Innocent VI, in 1356, this was once the largest and most important Carthusian monastery in France.

Collection Lambert en Avignon
Housed in the Musée d'Art Contemporain, this ensemble of more than 350 contemporary artworks is the private collection of Yvon Lambert. After loaning them to the city of Avignon for over 20 years, in 2011 he announced that they were to be a permanent donation, valued at nearly 100 million euros, the largest gift of artworks in a century. Avignon city council and the Culture Ministry purchased the neighbouring Hôtel de Montfaucon to double the exhibition space, which opened in 2012. The collection contains work by leading contemporary artists, including Cy Twombly, Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd, Niele Toroni, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltansky, Nan Goldin and Douglas Gordon. However, normally the work of only two or three selected artists from the collection is on display at any one time.

Ile de la Barthelasse
One of Europe’s largest river islands, peaceful Ile de la Barthelasse rests between two arms of the Rhône. Easily reached by bus from the Old City, or by ferry from the waterside close to Pont St Bénézet, the island has become the Avignon residents’ principal place for spending a few leisure hours. A huge array of bird species live on the island, including hawks, kites and harriers as well as many water fowl and other wildlife. In addition, there are green parks, shaded cycle paths, market gardens, waterside walks, campsites and restaurants, and sports facilities that include river boat hire.

Musée du Petit Palais (Little Palace Museum)
Located on the northern end of place du Palais, the Little Palace Museum was built for Cardinal Béranger Frédol between 1318 and 1320. Following extensive alterations, Pope Benoît made it his episcopal headquarters. Today, its 19 rooms house an impressive collection of frescoes, sculptures and Italian religious paintings from the 13th to 16th centuries, including works by Botticelli, Carpaccio and Giovanni di Paolo. The Angel of the Annunciation , by Sano Di Pietro (1406-1481), is one of the most remarkable paintings - the golden-haired angel has all the beauty of a pre-Raphaelite woman.

Musée Louis Vouland (Louis Vouland Museum)
Successful businessman and art collector Louis Vouland (1883-1973) bequeathed his 19th-century, neo-classical town house to the state together with its huge and prestigious collection of arts and crafts. His home was restored and opened as one of Avignon’s most charming museums in 1982, offering displaying Vouland’s quirky collection of 17th and 18th-century decorative arts. Highlights include high-quality faïence (earthenware) from Vincennes and Sèvres, and tapestries woven in Flanders, Aubusson and Gobelins. However, a dainty travel tea set in Sèvres faïence , which belonged to the Comtesse du Barry, mistress of Louis XV, steals the show. Outside is an attractive garden.

While the Ljubljanica may lack the might of the Danube or the Rhône, the river is a centrepiece for the city that has been prettified by architect Jože Plečnik. Walkways are shaded by weeping willows and the delightful trio of bridges (Trnovo Bridge, Cobblers' Bridge and Triple Bridge) were all crafted under his watchful eye. Couples still attach padlocks to Butchers' Bridge, before symbolically dropping the keys into the river below, locking in their love for eternity. River tours leave across from Prešernov Trg on the Old Town side.

Ljubljana Castle
Perched high above the city, Ljubljana Castle is a landmark medieval fortress that’s branched out. Not content with showing off its wealth of history (the castle has survived earthquakes, fires, explosions and invasions; it’s also been a royal residence, a military warehouse and a prison), the current incarnation is that of a cultural centre with regular concerts, exhibitions and fashion shows. It also has a restaurant, coffee house, gallery, gift shop, children’s theatre and a hi-tech audiovisual show that delves into the city’s history. To visit, take a tourist train from Prešernov Trg or catch the funicular from Krekov Trg. Walking up takes around 20 minutes but affords some sumptuous views.

Prešernov Trg (Prešeren Square)
The delightful Prešernov trg (Prešeren Square) is the very core of Ljubljana, marking the point between the Old Town and the city centre. The cobbled plaza comes alive with concerts and festivities in the summer and is home to the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. Most interesting, though, is the statue of influential Slovenian poet France Prešeren, who is depicted beneath a muse holding a laurel sprig. The statue faces a relief sculpture of his unrequited love interest, Julija Primic, who looks out from a building in Wolfova ulica. Now Prešeren will be as forlorn in death as he was in life.

Castle Hill
Castle Hill is a 1,5km long hill, overlooking the Danube, located in Budapest’s No1 District. The Old Town occupies the larger part of Castle Hill – it is also referred to as the Buda Castle; the Royal Palace occupies the southern portion.
Buda Royal Palace
The history of the building of the former Royal Palace, on the southern end of Castle Hill, can be traced back to as early as the 13th century. The construction of an impressively large, Gothic style Royal Palace was completed in 1424, during the reign of King Zsigmond ( Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund). Under the rule of King Mátyás I, the Palace was modified in the Renaissance style.
Fishermen’s Bastion
The Neo-Romanesque Fishermen’s Bastion, located behind the Mátyás Church, was erected between 1895 and 1902, on a site where previously the medieval castle walls had stood. The structure, which is a prominent landmark in the city, was designed by Frigyes Schulek. During the Middle-Ages the fish-market was located next to the church, and the Fishermen’s Guild was responsible for defending the adjacent section of the fortification…
Matthias Church
The Mátyás Church is one of Budapest’s, and Hungary’s, most important religious monuments. Numerous important historical events have taken place within its walls. Known officially as Buda Castle’s Church of Our Lady Mary, or as Buda Castle’s Coronation Church – it is commonly referred to as the Mátyás church. The exact date of its foundation is not known, but it was probably built in the middle of the 13th century..
Gellért Hill
Gellért Hill is a very popular beauty spot, the top of which can be accessed via tourist tracks from several sides. This dolomite hill, towering over the Danube between the Elizabeth (Erzsébet) and Liberty (Szabadság) Bridges, offers panoramic views of the Danube Valley and over Pest.
Parliament House
This is one of the capital’s, in fact the nation’s, most imposing buildings. Built between 1884 and 1902, based on Imre Steindl’s design, the Neo-Gothic building is one of the symbols of the capital. With its imposing 96m height, and 268m length, it is one of the definitive buildings along the banks of the Danube. Eighty-eight statues decorate its main façade, which overlooks the Danube.
Basilica
Erection of the St István Parish Church, generally known as The Basilica, was commenced in 1851, but was not completed until 1905. The Neo-Renaissance style church is the largest in the capital, with a length of 86m, breadth of 55m and a height of 96m.
Danube Bridges
Eight road bridges and two railway bridges cross the Danube within the precincts of the city. These bridges form an inalienable part of the city-scape. The bridges in the city-centre – the Margaret (Margit), Chain (Lánc), Elizabeth (Erzsébet), and the Liberty (Szabadság) Bridge– are determining elements of the city’s panorama.
Dohány Street Synagogue
The synagogue in Dohány Street is the largest one still functioning in Continental Europe. The use of two towers with onion-shaped domes, as an architectural feature in synagogues, was employed here for the first time in Hungary; it subsequently had a major influence on the evolution of synagogue architecture in the country regions.
Széchenyi Baths
It was as a result of the drillings of geologist Vilmos Zsigmondy, over the period 1868-77, that this medicinal water source, with a temperature of 74˚ C, was brought to the surface. The medicinal waters are particularly effective for the treatment of joint and muscle damage, arthritis and neuritis.
Andrássy Avenue
Andrássy Avenue provides one of Budapest’s most popular venues for strollers. This radial road, built between 1872 and 1885, indicates the strength of the desire at the time, to develop Budapest into a world-class city.
