Norwegian Consul General to experience the urban traffic in Guangzhou in 5 modes of transport

Dear Friends,
“Better cities – better life” is the theme of the EXPO 2010. Efficient urban transport is an important way of improving urban life. To illustrate this, and in order to experience the urban traffic in Guangzhou and explore a low-carbon lifestyle in a big city, the Norwegian Consul General Tormod Endresen will try out 5 different modes of transport from home to work every morning next week (March 1 to 5). He will share with you his interesting experience everyday on this blog, ending up with a  comparative analysis to the 5 transportation. Specific arrangements are as follows:
Route: From The Regal Harbor, Bing Jiang Dong Road (opposite to the north gate of Zhongshan University) to the Citic Plaza, Tianhe North Road
Schedule:
Monday, March 1 Bicycle

Better City, Better Life - by bicycle?

Dear all,

I embarked on my “better cities – better life” experiment today – riding my bicycle to work.

I got off to a good start – cycling slowly past some of my neighbours doing their morning gym at Zhongda Beimen, a sight which always make me happy. Then I got up the speed and headed for the big challenge – the Guangzhou Bridge and the Dadao, where the traffic is quite heavy in the morning. It all went well – and when I was crossing the Guangzhou Bridge I enjoyed the view across the river and to the modern highrises in Zhujiang Xin Chang. In general, I find you notice more of your surroundings when you are on a bike – more than when you are boxed up in a car. That includes the smells, of course, and some buses passing close by let out a good deal of exhaust, but it was not too bad.. When I approached the big intersection where Guangzhou Dadao meets Huanshi Lu I had to stop thinking about enjoying the surroundings – to circle my way through all the buses and cars took all my attention. I managed fine, and by the time I hit Tian He Bei I could embark on the wide new cycle lane which just has been made there, very nice and shufu – all the way to Citic Plaza where I rolled into the designated bicycle parking and left for my office, feeling great.

I started out from home in Bin Jiang Dong Lu at 7:50 and arrived safely at my office at Citic Plaza 30 minutes later, which is more or less the same time I would have used by car. I believe that makes my average speed 17 km. per hour..

In general, I must say the journey was a better experience than I thought – I also noted that there are a lot of more fellow cyclists out there than I had noticed from my car window. One of them kindly told me that my back tire was a bit flat before he pushed on. Next time I go, I think I will find an alternative route through the Zhujiang Xin Chang, and look for more designated bicycle lanes. I would like to commend Guangzhou government for making them. Lastly – let me appeal to car drivers – be considerate towards the cyclists – if they all quit their bikes and got into cars the Dadao will be even more crowded in the rush hour, remember.

Tomorrow I go by metro, leaving home at 0730 and starting off with a nice walk to the Lujiang metro station. I wonder how full the metro will be at that time.

1.jpeg

2.jpeg
3.jpeg
4.jpeg

5.jpeg

6.jpeg

7.jpeg
8.jpeg

Guangzhou metro – tai hao le!

Today it was time to take the metro to work. I left from home at 7:35, starting the day with a nice 15 minutes walk to Lujiang metro station, along with my colleague Irene. We entered the metro station – very nice and clean – waived our Yang Cheng Tongs – and after a short while we could get on the train to Kecun. The train was full of people going to work, so we were standing pretty packed, but it all went well. At Kecun, we changed to line 3 headed for the Guangzhou Dong, then we changed again at Tiyu Xi and got off at Linhexi, just a few metres from where we work. Total time used – 50 minutes, total cost (with discount) 2,85 quai. Not bad!

The only thing I wished for during my trip was a little bit more space. In a way – the Guangzhou metro is “tai hao le” – it is clean, efficient and inexpensive – which means it becomes very popular, and, as a result, quite crowded. The Guangzhou government is rapidly expanding the metro, both in terms of lines and capacity – so maybe, by the time of the Asian Games, metro becomes an even better choice for commuters. It is quicker than anything above the ground – that’s for sure!

In my hometown, Oslo, we have both metro and trams which move above the ground. It is a popular means of transport, and many people use it for their daily commute. It is certainly less crowded, but the Guangzhou metro moves faster and is more modern!

Tomorrow, I will go by taxi to work.

   1.jpeg

2.jpeg

Off to a good start  – by taxi

Today’s journey was a very good one – in a Guangzhou taxi – driven by a good and very knowledgeable driver.

Here is what happened: My journey to work started later than usual today – at 7:55. So when I got out on the Bin Jiang Dong Lu, I was expecting to wait for a long time for a taxi. I positioned myself strategically on the corner on Bin Jiang Dong and Xia Du Lu and put my hand out. I was lucky, because after a few minutes only, I found myself in a nice, air conditioned Santana taxi, headed for Tian He Bei. The driver was a knowledgeable man from Hebei province, steering safely through a lot of cars and buses across the Guangzhou Bridge.

With some effort – the driver understood what I tried to say in mandarin – and he knew some English, too, so we started off an interesting conversation about Norway and China. We started off with things like winters in Norway and my skiing experiences in Changchun, but quickly went on to economy and social issues. My driver friend noted, among other things, that “Norway hen you qian”, while I pointed to the fact that “Zhong guo ye hen you qian”. After having agreed that we were both from relatively rich countries, we entered into an interesting discussion about social security systems and differences between rich and poor. I felt very happy about our ability to communicate – even if I sometimes had to answer “bu mingbai”!

While we were driving – I was able to watch EXPO-promotion on the small screen in the taxi – talking about exactly what my experiment is about - “Better city,Better life”. The weather was good and traffic not too - bad – 30 minutes after I left home we said goodbye outside Citic Plaza. The taxi ride cost 23 quai – and gave me a comfortable and interesting start of my working day!

1.jpeg
2.jpeg
3.jpeg
4.jpeg

5.jpeg
6.jpeg

7.jpeg

8.jpeg

My hour on the bus

Today, it was time to test the Guangzhou bus system. I started off at 0735 from home and got on the 266 at Zhong Da Bei Men – along with my colleague Irene and three journalists from Nanfang Dianshitai. A lot of passengers on the bus – so it was a bit hard to get on, but we managed. After a few stops, we embarked on the Guangzhou dadao, which was floating pretty well this morning. We passed the bridge and my favourite view of the river and Zhujiang Xin Chang. I noticed cyclists passing us in good speed and thought, hmm, they might get to work a long time ahead of me this time...

Suddenly, a lot of people got off the bus – so it all became more comfortable. I even got a seat – but not for long, because we had to change to the 122 at Nan Fang Bao She. The first one which came was too full to get on, but the next one was OK. While standing there, we were able to watch TV on a monitor – an interesting movie clip showing dolphins making “smoke rings” under water. I always knew dolphins were intelligent, but hey, I never saw that before. While we were watching dolphins and news stories – some fellow passengers made other use of the time, like applying a last layer of make-up to look really smashing before meeting with their colleagues at work..

Towards the end of my journey I was able to “upgrade” to my own seat again – and after a journey of totally 55 minutes we got off at Citic Plaza. The bus-ride was good, but if I should compare with the metro, I think the metro is in the lead, not least because it took 30, not 55 minutes. It was also more expensive, at totally 4 quai. Everything is relative, however, a single journey ticket for the bus or subway in my hometown Oslo is NOK 25 (RMB 29) an amount that might buy you a good dinner for two in Guangzhou. So I am not complaining! As for the time spent – I am sure we could move faster on the BRT – I think I need to prolong my experiment and try that one out.

Tomorrow I will use my rollerblades to work, something I never did in Guangzhou. I hope I arrive at my work in one piece.

1.jpeg
2.jpeg
3.jpeg

4.jpeg

Fun on wheels!

I went to work by rollerblades today – the most fun way to get to work so far! I started out at 07:55 – and needed a few minutes to get back into the habit of rolling along – a fast and fun way to move! I was happy about my new helmet – I bought it yesterday after some of you rightly pointed out that I better use a helmet when cycling – and more so when you find your way through Guangzhou traffic on tiny roller blade wheels with no real brakes..

I was nervous about how to get across Guangzhou bridge, but that went well. Then I turned right and started on the best part of my trip – rolling down with the Zhujiang on my right and the new monumental buildings of Zhujiang Xin Chang on my left. By that time, the sun came out, and I realised how nice this waterfront area will be when it is all done. I then turned right on Xiancun Road and went straight all the way up to Tian He Dong.  50 minutes after I left home, I was at Citic Plaza, quite warm, but very happy. It all went pretty smooth, I found out that wet and uneven parts of the road were my biggest challenges.

I bought my rollerblades in New York a long time ago and used them frequently there. Using skiing poles, I could really work up some speed. This was my first time ever in Guangzhou, and my ski poles are left back in Norway. Still it was great fun - the most fun way I have gotten to work in a long time. But make sure to pay attention to traffic if you want to try – and learn how to stop before you roll away!

I will revert next week with an analysis of all of the five different ways of transport I tried out this week. I think bike and metro are likely winners – but rollerblades was the most fun!

Throughout the week, my experiment has been followed by a lot of journalists, I want to thank them for their attention. Together, I hope we have contributed to an important discussion about the role of urban transport in building a better city for a better life.

Have a nice week-end!

5 ways to work - the verdict

Following my experiment last week, I want to try and rank the different modes of transport I tried out. My wish to contribute to the “Better City – Better Life” makes it important to pay attention to air pollution and carbon emissions. For that reason metro and bike comes out first. The metro is excellent even if too crowded in the rush hour. To go by bike is a fast and environmentally friendly, it would become even better with more bicycle lanes and more considerate drivers. And as a bonus, you stay fit without having to go to the gym. My taxi ride was a very pleasant and interesting one, so taxi comes out ahead of the bus, which took a long time, even if a much lower price. Rollerblades is fun, but comes out as “not so good” on safety. Private car is comfortable, but costly and polluting.

I have been very happy to see the kind of interest I have been able to stimulate with my experiment. In light of all the attention I have got – I feel the need to say a few things about why I did it. Firstly, I should underline that I did not mean the experiment – or the ranking above – as a very scientific thing – it is based on my subjective impressions only. Secondly, I should say that I should not make promises I cannot keep. My carbon foot print will probably remain above average, because I will continue to use cars and airplanes a lot in my work. The real heroes are the people who commute in an environmentally friendly way every day. What I wanted with my experiment – and what I hope I managed to do – was to stimulate discussion about urban transport and how important it is to life in big cities.  It is an important discussion, and one of the messages I wanted to send is that you do not have to go by car just because you have one!

The experiment and all the response I have received has been a very stimulating experience. My interest in urban transport continues – I need obviously to try BRT – and a BYD hybrid or all electric car is also on my wish list. Please join a vote here to choose your favorate mode of transportation.

Tonight, we will launch Norway’s EXPO participation in Guangzhou. If you want a pre-view of our pavilion and message – come by 225 Beijing Lu Friday or Saturday.

Talk to you soon!
